Toshiba Laptops FAQ:

Question: What does the “satillite” in Toshiba laptops mean?
Does it mean that it gets internet connections from satillites or what?

Answer: The “Satellite” name is simply a model brand name and therefore the laptops bear no technical association to terminologies used in “satellite phone/satphone” or any modes of data transfer via orbital satellites.

Question: Do the new Toshiba laptops come with a webcam built in?

Answer: Yes, the latest ones do.

Question: Where can I download a new free camera software for toshiba vista laptop?
My camera assistant software for toshiba laptop doesn’t function any more. When I open the software, the light for camera doesn’t go on, and the screen shows “no preview”. Seems like part of the software was missing. Could anyone please give me a website or link where I can download a new free software? Mine is new home premium vista.

Answer: If you think the part of the software is missing, then you will need to go to the toshiba site and download a fresh installation package probably they will have an updated version. But what I think is that the camera is bad and you might need a replacement.

Question: How do you increase the volume on a Toshiba laptop?
Not talking Windows audio settings, the volume on the laptop itself. I was directed to a function control but that was a simply mute/unmute control. I have a Toshiba Satellite L40 14N.

Answer: At the top near the bottom of the screen there’s 2 buttons for volume up and down.

Question: How do I fix a problem with my Toshiba laptop which is not recognizing USB hardware?
I have a Toshiba Satellite L305-S5921 laptop that runs Vista and is less than a year old. It just started giving the following message…”USB Device not Recognized”. One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned. As a result my mouse will not work. However. a thumb drive will work.

Answer: You can send it back to Toshiba, as it is under the one year warranty, and this sounds like a hardware issue.

Question: What’s better toshiba laptops or dell laptops?
My brother and sister both have dell lapotps and when I wanted to get a laptop the prices got higher so I don’t know if I should get a toshiba or a dell. Some people say toshiba is the best and some say dell is.

Question: How can I restore my Toshiba laptop to its factory setting?
I need to restore my Laptop to its factory setting. Its a Toshiba Mod. # PSAA5U-02100R

Answer: Your best option is a restore disc. It’s the disc that came with the computer. This will completely return the laptop it to it’s original settings.

Barring that, get any windows disc. When you start your computer keep hitting the F keys. Depending on your laptop one of the F keys will open a boot menu. Mine is F8. Tell your computer to boot from disc. This will allow you to reinstall windows. And format your hard drive.

Question: Are Toshiba Laptops any good?
Looking for a laptop and I’ve noticed the Toshiba laptops are in my price range but the question is are they reliable?

Answer: I have the Windows 7 Satellite A500 (I think that’s what it is! I keep forgetting the letters but not the numbers)…it’s very good and they are seriously reliable, Any errors I’ve had on mine are of my own making, and thankfully I’ve fixed them. Mine cost close to almost a £900…but it was worth it, and it comes with a hard disk recovery tool which I’ve only had to use once (again – because I screwed up lol). I do hear conflicting reports about their customer service though – typical after I’ve got it – and I think that’s the only down side to the Toshiba industry.

Toshiba Satellite Pro FAQ:

Question: Can I install a graphics card in a Toshiba Satellite Pro.?
I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro A300D-132 and I like to install a new Nvidia 8600Gt is this possible?

Answer: No. As far as accelerating your laptop graphics goes — unfortunately its shopping time for a new laptop. Laptops don’t have normal graphic card slots. 99.9 % of laptops have their graphics soldered onto the motherboard, and the very few machines that use Mini-PCIe cards for graphics, I have seen no aftermarket Mini-PCI-e cards available at all.

Question: How Many Hours Can A Battery Last For An Toshiba Satellite Pro A60 Laptop?
I have a Toshiba satellite pro A60 laptop and the battery is basically done and I want to buy a new one but I can’t find any information about how long the A60’s battery lasts after full charge.

Answer: With all the battery management stuff turned on a laptop should last anywhere between 45 mins and 3 hrs with a fit battery.

Question: How do you install ram in a toshiba satellite pro 490cdt?
I did find one partial diagram from a ram manufacture but I’m not totally sure if it is totally right.

Answer: For most laptops they will have letters next to each screw on the bottom. Look for the ‘M’ letters next to the screw. If that doesn’t work then go for the removable panel toward the middle; this is usually were the memory is. Chances are there are either one or two screws to remove and then the memory itself is clipped in. There will be two clips on each side of the memory holding it in and if you pull them away from the memory then the module will pop right out.

Question: How to install a wireless connection in Toshiba Satellite Pro 4200’s laptop?
I was just given a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4200’s laptop and would like to use a wireless connection. From what I found out there is no wireless built-in. My friend gave a D-Link AIrPlus 2.4 GHz wireless cardbus adapter but it seems like there is no input for it. What should I do?

Answer: There should be a “cardbus” slot on the side of the laptop, it may currently have a cover on it. It is possible that your Pro 4200 does not have the “optional” card reader.

Question: What’s largest capacity hard drive for Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600 Laptop?
Need to upgrade to larger hard drive. Would like highest capacity drive that’s compatible with Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600 Laptop.

Answer: I would recommend a 250 Gb though it can support up to 400Gb.

Question: How to reboot Toshiba Satellite Pro L300 Series w.o recovery discs?
My friend has a toshiba satellite pro L300 series laptop with a windows xp software. She wants to reboot it but doesn’t have the recovery discs. Is there a way to do this manually?

Answer: Do you really mean reboot and not reinstall?

To reboot, you do not need the recovery discs. Just press the Ctrl + Alt + Del keys to reboot the computer. If the system has hung up then it can’t be rebooted. You will have to hold down the power switch for several seconds until the system shuts down. Then switch it on again.

If you need to reinstall, you will need the recovery discs. Reinstallation can be done manually without the recovery discs, but you will need to have the Windows XP CD & license key, and all the drivers for the notebook.

Reinstalling it manually can be done, but there may be several components which will not be recognised as the XP CD may not have the drivers, such as network adapters, video adapters, audio device, etc.

You will also not get back all the utilities that came with the original installation such as touchpad drivers and utilities, etc

Question: Does anyone know if I can upgrade memory on my Toshiba Satellite Pro L100?
It has around 448mb ram and I am looking to upgrade this to around 1 or 2gb.

Answer: I am assuming that you have 1 x 512mb RAM in it, but you could have 2 x 256 RAM in it also. Grab a screwdriver and open the port on the bottom of your laptop where your RAM is located and you should be able to tell how many sticks you have and how many it can hold. Just by the model I would say it can hold 2 sticks and up to a maximum of 1GB or 2 x 512mb sticks.

Question: How can I access the internet from a toshiba satellite pro model 460cdx?
I can’t use a regular cord because there’s no spot to put it. Do I have to use wireless?

Answer: These are relatively OLD laptops, and if I remember correctly, they were not made with either ethernet or wifi. To use the internet you will need either an ethernet card or a wifi card. If you have a wireless router you can just add a wireless pcmcia card. If you only have an ethernet router you can add an ethernet pcmcia card.

You will have to add one or the other to connect to the internet.

Have you ever wondered how small a laptop can be? Well, utilizing today’s technology Toshiba does a perfect job at demonstrating it; the Libertto U100 is one of the very few laptops that have such a rich feature set fitted altogether within such a small space. Of course, if you believe that a fingerprint authentication system is too much for such a small device then you are wrong; but if you think that you can only have HDD protection on larger laptops then… you are wrong again!

This miraculously small laptop manufactured by Toshiba will surprise you in many different ways. First of all, Japanese have made their magic again and reduced the motherboards size to nearly one third of its initial size. Apart from that, they also minimized the 802.11b/g PCI Wireless card to half of its size! Of course, those space improvements left enough space for an 1.20Ghz Intel Pentium M microprocessor (with 2MB of L2 cache and 400Mhz FSB) to find its home inside the U100.

Regarding connectivity, the U100 has 2 USB slots, 1 IEEE – 1394 port as well as LAN and modem ports. Do you think that’s enough? Well, sorry but the U100 is also equipped with a docking connector as well as an RGB mini-connector.
And now to the meat! Toshiba has equipped the U100 with its very own Hard Disk Drive protection system. The system uses a 3D accelerometer in order to detect sudden speed changes (this might occur when the laptop for some reason falls or bounces). If such acceleration is detected then the hard drive (which by the way has a capacity of 60GB) head stops any motion until things are back to normality. Apart from this really helpful feature, the U100 is equipped with a fingerprint authentication system. The laptop will only operate if it recognizes the user’s fingerprints.
By now you might be wondering “Okay, this laptop really has lots of features; it must be really heavy considering its dimensions!” Well, don’t be surprised to read that the U100 weights just a minimal of 2.16 pounds!

One final thing to note about the U100 is that Toshiba has updated its display; This time, it’s a 7.2” widescreen LCD with WXGA(1280×768pixels) which is also further illuminated by a LED backlight.

With all the above said, there’s just one more thing that I didn’t say: the choice is completely yours!

Hi all,

I was just wondering if anyone knows whether or not installing Windows Vista Home Premium on my Toshiba Libretto u100 will void my warranty?

Apparently there is no official video driver for the Libretto u100? Will this overheat the graphics card?

Answer: There’s no way they could enforce that voiding your waranty. All you’d need to do is reinstall windows XP and they’d never know. Besides I’ve never heard of running any kind of software voiding a waranty on hardware, it might prevent support but they’d just have you reformat your hard drive and reinstall windows XP.
